Flatrock and the Flatrock Playhouse Historic Flat Rock home of the Flat Rock Playhouse and Carl Sandburg House

Flat Rock is a quaint and wonderfully historic village. Not far from the larger town of Hendersonville, easily accessed from interstate 26. This small hamlet is located in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, part of Henderson County. Flat Rock was incorporated in 1995.

In the early days around 1807 the village of Flat Rock started its historic journey being built throughout this granite mountain making it a perfect for site of Cherokee Indian gatherings as well as a site used by early traders. The area became the “Little Charleston in the Mountains” For many it was a place to build summer homes to escape the heat. Many of these homes still stand today and have been registered with the National Register of Historical Places.

Flat Rock is best known for the Carl Sandburg home as well as the Historic Flat Rock Playhouse.  At the playhouse the main granite rock is mostly flat and large portions remain exposed on the grounds. Thus, the community became known as Flat Rock. The village was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Historic Flat Rock District in 1973.

For those seeking a quieter more historic feel, Flat Rock could be the perfect place to settle. Homes take on the historic charm of yesteryear and are not always in abundance. Finding the perfect home is Flat Rock could be worth the wait.
